Optional AI Tools

AI assistance - on your terms, with your account

Knowledge Quest Studio includes optional AI tools for drafting lesson content and generating quiz questions. They are completely off by default. You decide if and when to use them - and nothing is ever sent to any AI service unless you choose to enable it.

🔑

Your API key, your account

AI features require you to enter your own OpenAI API key in Settings. Your key is stored only in your browser - it is never sent to Knowledge Quest Studio's servers, because Knowledge Quest Studio has no servers. Every AI request goes directly from your browser to your own OpenAI account, billed at standard API rates (typically a few cents per use).

🛡️

Completely optional - skeptics welcome

If you prefer not to use AI tools, simply don't enter a key. Every feature in the editor works fully without it. The AI panels are hidden unless a key is configured. Many excellent instructors choose not to use AI at all, and the tool is designed with that as the default state.

🌱

Choose a lighter-footprint model

When you do use AI, you can choose between gpt-4o-mini (fast, energy-efficient, lower cost - suitable for most tasks) and gpt-4o (more capable, higher energy use). The mini model uses significantly less computing power and is the default recommendation. Choosing it is a small but real way to reduce the environmental footprint of AI use.

✍️

What the AI tools can do

Draft a lesson outline from a topic or pasted text. Generate a first draft of slide content. Suggest quiz questions for a question pool. Review and edit everything before it goes into your lesson - you are always the author. AI suggestions are a starting point, not a finished product.

My students are parents studying during nap time, caregivers logging on after a long shift, first-generation students with no one to call for help, immigrants and refugees building a new life through education. They deserve the same quality of teaching as anyone else.

When professional instructional design software costs $1,599 a year, it creates a two-tier system: well-funded institutions get immersive, interactive content, and everyone else gets a PDF. That gap falls hardest on the students who need the most support. Knowledge Quest Studio exists to close it.

It is built around approaches that meet diverse learners where they are: Universal Design for Learning (UDL), flipped classroom models, scaffolded content, and accessibility-first design, so that every instructor, at every institution, can deliver pedagogically sound lessons regardless of budget.

Free forever -seriously.

Other tools charge hundreds of dollars per year per instructor. Knowledge Quest Studio is free for educators, with no feature limits, no expiration dates, and no limited trials.

Common questions

Everything teachers ask before getting started.

Do I need to install anything to use it?
No. The online editor runs entirely in your browser - no account, no install, no plugins required. Open the link and start building.
Which learning management systems does it work with?
Knowledge Quest Studio exports SCORM 1.2 packages that work with any SCORM-compliant LMS, including D2L Brightspace, Canvas, Moodle, and Blackboard. Upload the ZIP file and quiz scores will post directly to your gradebook.
Is it really free? What's the catch?
Free for educators and educational institutions for noncommercial use - no feature limits, no limited trials, and no ads. It is licensed under the PolyForm Noncommercial License 1.0.0. If you are interested in commercial use, contact me for commercial licensing.
Where are my files saved?
In the browser version, your lesson is automatically saved in your browser - no download needed. Nothing is uploaded to any cloud server - your content stays with you.
Can I use images and audio from the internet?
Yes. The asset library lets you search Pixabay, Openverse, and Wikimedia Commons for Creative Commons–licensed images, and Jamendo for royalty-free music. Attribution is automatically added to a Credits slide in your lesson.
Does it work offline?
The editor requires an internet connection. Your lesson content is saved in your browser's local storage so your work is preserved between sessions - but an active connection is needed to use the editor and to search for CC images.
Can students use the lessons on phones or tablets?
The exported lessons are fully responsive and work on any device, like phones, tablets, laptops, desktops. The editor itself is designed for laptop or desktop use.
Can I use my existing PowerPoint slides?
Yes. Use File → Import PowerPoint… to bring your existing slides into Knowledge Quest Studio. The importer works in both the desktop app and the browser version. Text and images are imported from each slide; you can then add quizzes, audio narration, and interactive elements in the editor.
Are the lessons accessible for students with disabilities?
Yes. Lessons exported from Knowledge Quest Studio are built with WCAG 2.1 accessibility in mind. The exported course player includes keyboard navigation so students can move through slides, answer quizzes, and interact with content without a mouse. Interactive elements have visible focus indicators, images support alt text, and the layout uses sufficient color contrast. The editor itself also supports full keyboard operation and is compatible with screen readers for instructors who need it.

For a full breakdown of every WCAG 2.1 criterion and how it is implemented feature by feature, see the Accessibility Statement.
How do I get help or report a problem?
Click the question mark icon in the editor to open the built-in Help panel with step-by-step guidance for every feature. To report a bug or request a new feature, visit the Knowledge Quest Studio feedback board. You can post anonymously, see what others have reported, and vote on requests.

Dr. Mary Lebens

Creator of Knowledge Quest Studio

I know my students because I've been my students. First-generation. Low-income. Figuring out higher education without a roadmap. That background is why I care so much about who gets access to quality online learning, and who doesn't.

The students I teach are parents squeezing in coursework during nap time, adult learners caring for a sibling or an aging parent, immigrants and refugees building a new life through education, and students juggling work and family with very little margin for error. As a former ELL Information Technology instructor with AmeriCorps, and language access and clear, navigable content aren't nice-to-haves for me; they're the whole point.

I built Knowledge Quest Studio because the tools that make online learning genuinely engaging, interactive, accessible, and designed around how people actually learn, were locked behind price tags that most educators and institutions simply can't afford. That's not acceptable. So I built one and made it free.

In real life, I'm a software engineer. I spent years at Oracle before becoming a technical college instructor. I brought that engineering background to every design decision in this tool: it has to be fast, reliable, and genuinely easy for a non-technical instructor to use on a Monday morning.
